Expensify reports, we alert
Expensify alternative and competitors: real-time alerts on the cards you already have
Expensify is the one big expense platform that works with any card. It is also built around expense reports, its feed of your own card lands a day or two late, and its cheapest price assumes you route spend onto its card. This page says where Expensify wins and where a monitoring layer fits instead.

Short answer
What is the best Expensify alternative?
The best Expensify alternative depends on what job you are actually replacing. If you want full expense reports, receipt scanning, and reimbursements on cards you already hold, Ramp and Zoho Expense are the usual picks, and Ramp has a genuinely free tier. If your problem is different, that you want to know the moment a charge breaks a budget rather than reading it on a report two days later, then you are not looking for another expense platform at all. You are looking for a monitoring layer. Spendnotify watches the corporate cards and bank accounts you already have, checks every transaction against your budgets, and alerts a human by email, SMS, or Slack within moments. It does not scan receipts or build reports, and if those are the point, keep Expensify.
Side by side
Expensify vs Spendnotify, stated accurately
These solve two different problems. One turns spend into filed, reimbursed, reconciled reports. The other pages a human the moment spend goes wrong.

| Expensify | Spendnotify | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An expense management platform: receipt scanning (SmartScan), expense reports, approvals, reimbursements, bill pay, and its own Expensify Card. Report-first. | A read-only monitoring and alerting layer on the cards and bank accounts you already have. Not accounting software, not a card issuer. |
| Works with your existing cards | Yes. Card-agnostic. It imports from any bank or card, which is its real strength. | Yes. Your Amex, Chase, or Citi program stays exactly where it is. |
| Speed of transaction visibility | Immediate on the Expensify Card. On a third-party card, transactions appear when they post, typically within 1 to 2 business days. | Real-time. Alerts fire within moments of the charge, on the cards you already carry. |
| Receipts, reports, reimbursements | Yes. SmartScan OCR, full expense reports, approval flows, and ACH reimbursement. This is the core product. | No. We do not scan receipts, build reports, or run reimbursements. Not what we do. |
| Accounting sync (QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite) | Yes. Direct integrations to the major ledgers. | No. We integrate none of them, and we will not imply we do. |
| Real-time budget threshold alerts | No. Expensify surfaces spend through reports and rules, not a live 80% warning and 100% breach per employee, team, and category. | Yes. That is the whole product: budget alerts at 80% and 100% by email, SMS, and Slack. |
| Subscription and anomaly monitoring | Not a focus. Renewal alerts, price-increase detection, and duplicate-charge flags are outside the report workflow. | Yes. Subscription monitoring and anomaly detection run on every transaction. |
| Published pricing | Collect $5 per member per month. Control is custom, marketed as low as $9 per active member per month, but that price assumes near-total Expensify Card usage. Own-card teams pay closer to $18 on annual. | Flat monthly, not per member. Planned launch pricing: Team $199, Growth $449, Scale $999. Enterprise custom. See pricing. |
| Can it hard-block a transaction | Only on the Expensify Card, through card controls. It cannot decline a charge on your existing bank card. | No. It never moves, holds, or blocks money. It alerts a human who acts through your existing controls. |
| Best for | Teams that need receipts, expense reports, reimbursements, and accounting sync, and are happy to route spend through the Expensify Card for the discount. | Teams keeping their existing cards who want real-time alerts, subscription monitoring, and anomaly detection layered on top of the reports they already run. |

Credit where it is due
Where Expensify genuinely wins
No hedging. These are real strengths, and a monitoring layer replaces none of them. If two or three describe your problem, Expensify or another expense platform is the right buy.
Card-agnostic by design
Unlike Ramp, Brex, or BILL Spend & Expense, Expensify does not make you switch cards. It ingests transactions from any card or bank. That alone puts it ahead of the card-first crowd for teams keeping their own program.
Receipts and reports done well
SmartScan reads a photographed receipt, matches it to the charge, and rolls it into a report. Approvals, reimbursements, and per-diem rules all live in one place. We do none of that, and it is genuinely useful work.
Real accounting integrations
Direct syncs to QuickBooks, Xero, and NetSuite mean coded expenses land in the ledger without a manual export. A bolt-on monitoring layer cannot match that, and Spendnotify does not pretend to.
A low entry price
Collect starts at $5 per member per month, and individuals can track receipts for free. For a small team that mostly needs receipt capture and reimbursement, that is hard to beat.
Cashback on its card
The Expensify Card earns 1% cash back on US purchases, and its usage also unlocks the subscription discount. If you are willing to put spend on it, that is money back and a cheaper seat. A monitoring layer earns nothing; it only prevents losses.
The honest summary
If your job is receipts, reports, reimbursements, and clean accounting sync, Expensify is a strong pick. The rest of this page is for the teams whose job is different: catching bad spend as it happens, not filing it after.
The part worth reading twice
Why Expensify's price rewards its own card
Expensify is functionally card-agnostic, but it is not commercially card-agnostic, and the difference shows up on the invoice. The Control plan is marketed as low as $9 per active member per month. That headline is real, but it is a floor you reach only by routing spend onto the Expensify Card. The discount is proportional: the more of your approved US spend runs on their card, the cheaper the seat, up to a documented maximum of 50% off, and only on an annual subscription. Keep your own Amex or Chase, and you sit near the standard rate, roughly $18 per member, about double the advertised number.
Read that plainly and it is a mild penalty for keeping your cards. The one incumbent that lets you keep your card also charges you more for doing so. None of that is hidden or dishonest on Expensify's part; it is a coherent way to price a product whose economics lean on card interchange. It just means the sticker price and your price can be two very different numbers, which is the same gap we counted in the full Expensify pricing breakdown.
Spendnotify prices the opposite way. It is flat monthly and has nothing to do with which cards you use, because it issues none and earns no interchange. Team is $199, Growth $449, Scale $999, and the number does not move when you add a salesperson or keep every card you already have.
The other shape
What a monitoring layer does instead
Keep Expensify for the reports. Add a layer that reads the same transactions in real time and tells a human the moment one breaks a rule.
Budgets and thresholds
Limits per employee, team, and category. A warning at 80% reaches the budget owner, a breach at 100% escalates to finance, and every alert carries the amount, the merchant, and the running total: $8,204 / $10,000.
Subscriptions that renew quietly
Renewal alerts before the charge, price-increase detection when a vendor raises its rate, and zombie subscriptions surfaced for the seats nobody uses. Reports show this at close; monitoring shows it before the money leaves.
Anomalies and expense fraud
Duplicate charges, amount outliers, new or unusual merchants, off-hours spend. Our anomaly detection flags them as they land rather than at close, alongside a live dashboard of budget vs actual by team and category.
The plain limitation, stated the way we would want it stated to us: Spendnotify cannot decline a transaction, and it cannot file an expense report. Expensify can do the second, and a card-issuing platform can do the first. What a monitoring layer adds is time. When a charge lands on your existing card, Expensify shows it once it posts, typically a day or two later, on a report. We show it within moments, to a named person, with the budget context attached, so someone can call the vendor, freeze the card through the issuer, or reverse a booking while it is still reversible.
The gap is structural, and it is the whole reason this product exists. Every card-first platform, Ramp, Brex, BILL Spend & Expense, Rippling Spend, gets real-time control by issuing its own card. Expensify, the one card-agnostic incumbent, documents third-party card transactions as arriving when they post, typically within 1 to 2 business days. That is accounting speed, not alerting speed. So nobody in the category does real-time alerting on the cards a company already holds, which is exactly the hole Spendnotify fills. Questions
Expensify alternatives, answered
What is the best Expensify alternative?
It depends on what you are replacing. If you want full expense reports, receipt scanning, and reimbursements on your own cards, Ramp and Zoho Expense are the common picks. If you want real-time alerts on the cards you already carry, without waiting for transactions to post, Spendnotify is the read-only monitoring layer that does exactly that.
Does Expensify work with my existing corporate card?
Yes. Expensify is card-agnostic and imports transactions from any bank or card. The catch is speed: third-party card transactions appear when they post, typically within 1 to 2 business days, while charges on the Expensify Card show up immediately. So it works with your card, but not in real time.
Why do companies look for an Expensify alternative?
Three reasons come up most: pricing that gets cheaper only if you route spend onto the Expensify Card, a workflow built around expense reports rather than real-time alerts, and the wish to keep existing Amex, Chase, or Citi cards without a per-member bill that rewards switching. Teams that want alerts, not reports, look elsewhere.
How much does Expensify cost?
The Collect plan is $5 per member per month. The Control plan is custom, marketed as low as $9 per active member per month, but that best case assumes nearly all spend runs through the Expensify Card. A team keeping its own cards pays closer to the standard $18 per member on an annual subscription. See Expensify pricing for the worked numbers.
Can I get real-time alerts on the cards I already have?
Yes. A read-only monitoring layer does this. Spendnotify watches the corporate cards and bank accounts you already hold, checks every transaction against the budgets you set, and alerts by email, SMS, or Slack within moments. No new card, no receipt reports, no migration.
Is Spendnotify a replacement for Expensify?
No, and it is important to say so. Spendnotify does not scan receipts, build expense reports, run reimbursements, or sync to QuickBooks. If you need those, keep Expensify or pick another expense platform. Spendnotify adds the one thing report software does not: real-time budget alerts, subscription monitoring, and anomaly detection on your existing cards.
