From: SpendNotify Alerts
Certify, Chrome River and Abacus are all Emburse now
Emburse alternatives and Emburse competitors priced on one company
The right Emburse alternative depends on which Emburse you have. Small teams on Emburse Spend usually pay less on Zoho Expense or Expensify Collect. Certify customers, now on Emburse Professional, compare Navan, Fyle and Ramp. Chrome River customers, now on Emburse Enterprise, mostly compare SAP Concur. Each tool bills on a different meter, so the table below prices the same 60 person company on all of them.
Department budget alerts on the cards you already hold, from $199 a month for the whole company.

Set a department budget and see the day it would have warned you
Emburse and every tool below check spend one expense at a time, after the receipt is in. None of them tells the marketing lead that the team has used 80 percent of the quarter's budget by week five. Pick a budget, replay a month of card spend, and watch when the alert fires. It runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Short answer
What are the best Emburse alternatives?
For a small US team on Emburse Spend, Zoho Expense and Expensify Collect cost less on the same headcount, and Ramp or Brex cost nothing if you move your cards to them. For a mid-size team on Emburse Professional (the old Certify), Navan Expense, Fyle and Ramp Plus are the usual shortlist. For a large or global team on Emburse Enterprise (the old Chrome River), SAP Concur is the realistic alternative, and staying while negotiating is often the cheaper move.
Before you compare
Which Emburse product you are leaving changes the shortlist
Emburse is a group of expense products bought and renamed over several years. A Certify customer and an Abacus customer are both "on Emburse", but they pay differently, run different software and need different replacements.
Swipe the table sideways to compare all columns.
| Name you know | Name on emburse.com today | Who it is sold to | Published price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Certify | Emburse Professional. The old product page now redirects there. | Growing finance teams. Integrates NetSuite, QuickBooks Online and Desktop, Sage Intacct and Microsoft Dynamics. | None. Demo and quote. |
| Chrome River | Emburse Enterprise. The old product page now redirects there. | Larger and global organizations. | None. Demo and quote. |
| Abacus | Emburse Spend | Smaller companies based in the United States and Australia. | Basic $8, Plus $12 per active user a month. Custom quoted. |
| Nexonia | Emburse Nexonia | Emburse describes Nexonia's roots in expense management for non-profits. | None. |
Why staying can make sense
Emburse is large and established, with 700+ employees and more than 12 million users across 200 countries by its own count. Chrome River in particular handles multi-entity, multi-currency approval chains that few alternatives match. If your pain is the price and not the product, a well-prepared renewal negotiation usually saves more than a migration costs.
Why companies start looking
Two products out of three have no public price, so a renewal is a negotiation you cannot benchmark from the website. Small teams see that card platforms now give away expense software for free. And mid-size teams that bought Certify years ago find the product renamed, the roadmap shared across a portfolio, and want one tool for cards, expenses and approvals.
The shortlist
Emburse competitors compared on price, meter and fit
The "meter" column is the one buyers skip and the one that sets the bill. Emburse Spend charges only for people who submit. Others charge for everyone in the workspace, for each report, or for each card user.
Swipe the table sideways to compare all columns.
| Tool | Published price | What it bills on | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emburse Spend | Basic $8, Plus $12 per user a month. Custom quoted. | People who submit an expense that month. Approvers are free unless they also submit. | Small US teams with many approvers. Basic caps ACH reimbursements at 50. |
| Zoho Expense | Standard $3, Premium $5 per user a month billed yearly ($4 and $6 monthly). | Any user who creates expenses or reports. | Cost-first teams, especially if they already run Zoho Books. |
| Expensify | Collect $5 per member. Control $18 per active member on an annual plan. | Collect, every member. Control, anyone who submits, approves or exports. | Expense-first teams that want simple reports and SmartScan. |
| SAP Concur Expense | Base from $7, Plus from $11 per report. Premium and travel custom. | Each expense report, with unlimited users. | Global programs and Chrome River customers who need deep audit and travel. |
| Fyle (Sage) | Growth $11.99, Business $14.99 per active user a month billed yearly. | Anyone who creates an expense or has a card with a transaction that month. Minimums of 5 and 10. | Teams on Sage Intacct, and anyone who wants to keep their existing cards. |
| Navan Expense | First 5 active users free, then $15 per active user a month, up to 300 employees. | Active users. | Companies where travel is a large share of spend. |
| Ramp | Free $0. Plus $15 per user a month plus a platform fee. | Users, on Ramp's own card. Free connects QuickBooks Online and Xero only. | US companies ready to move card spend to one issuer. |
| Brex | Essentials $0. Premium $12 per user a month. Enterprise custom. | Users, on the Brex card, subject to eligibility. | Funded or higher-revenue companies, including teams abroad. |
The math that decides it
How much does Emburse cost against each alternative?
One US company, 60 employees. 40 of them submit one expense report a month. 5 managers approve but never submit anything. Nobody else touches the tool. Every number below is the vendor's own list price on its own meter, for a year, before any discount, card rebate or implementation fee.
Swipe the table sideways to compare all columns.
| Plan | Who is billed here | Monthly | Year one software |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ramp Free or Brex Essentials | Nobody, if you move cards to them and qualify | $0 | $0 |
| Zoho Expense Standard | 40 submitters at $3 | $120 | $1,440 |
| Zoho Expense Premium | 40 submitters at $5 | $200 | $2,400 |
| Expensify Collect | 45 members at $5 | $225 | $2,700 |
| SAP Concur Expense Base | 40 reports at $7 | $280 | $3,360 |
| Emburse Spend Basic | 40 submitters at $8, approvers free | $320 | $3,840 |
| SAP Concur Expense Plus | 40 reports at $11 | $440 | $5,280 |
| Fyle Growth | 40 active users at $11.99 | $480 | $5,755 |
| Emburse Spend Plus | 40 submitters at $12, approvers free | $480 | $5,760 |
| Navan Expense | 35 active users at $15 after 5 free | $525 | $6,300 |
| Brex Premium | 45 users at $12 | $540 | $6,480 |
| Ramp Plus | 45 users at $15, plus a platform fee | $675 + fee | $8,100 + fee |
| Expensify Control | 45 active members at $18, annual plan | $810 | $9,720 |

The approver count moves the ranking
Emburse Spend and Zoho bill only people who create expenses. Expensify Control, Brex and Ramp bill the approvers too. With 5 approvers the gap is small. A company where 20 managers approve but rarely spend sees Emburse Spend climb several rows cheaper. Emburse also sells a 12 month annual plan at $7 on Basic and $11 on Plus for at least 20 active users, which takes Basic to $3,360 a year here.
Report count moves Concur
Concur charges per report, not per person. If your 40 people batch expenses into one report a month, Concur Base undercuts Emburse Spend Basic. If they file weekly, the same team creates around 170 reports a month and Concur becomes the most expensive line here.
The $0 rows have a condition
Ramp Free and Brex Essentials are funded by interchange on their own cards. They are free only if you move your card program to them and pass their underwriting. Ramp Free also connects only QuickBooks Online and Xero, so NetSuite and Sage Intacct books push you to Plus.
Pick by the problem you have
Best Emburse alternative in each situation
A single ranked list hides the fact that the right answer moves with your Emburse product, your ledger and whether you are willing to change card issuer.
01
On Emburse Spend with QuickBooks
Zoho Expense or Expensify Collect for the lowest software bill on the cards you keep. Ramp Free if you will switch cards.
02
On Certify with NetSuite or Sage Intacct
Fyle Business for Sage Intacct, Ramp Plus or Navan for NetSuite. Price all three at your real active-user count.
03
On Chrome River with global entities
SAP Concur is the like-for-like move. Negotiating the Emburse Enterprise renewal is often cheaper than either migration.
04
You want cards and expenses in one place
Ramp or Brex. Read the Ramp vs Brex comparison for eligibility and the fees on top.
05
Travel is half your spend
Navan. Booking is free up to 300 employees and the expense side starts free for five users.
06
The expense tool is fine, the budget is not
You may not need a new platform. An alert on the card spend you already have warns the budget owner mid-month.
If you switch
How to leave Emburse without a messy month-end
Start from the contract, not the demo. Emburse Professional and Enterprise contracts are annual or multi-year, and the notice window to cancel is usually 30 to 90 days before the renewal date. Find that date first and work back, because a missed notice window buys you another full year.
Export history before access ends. You want every approved report with its receipt images, the audit trail of who approved what, and your policy rules written down. The IRS expects you to keep receipts that support a deduction for as long as the return can be examined, usually three years and longer in some cases, so plan where those images will live.
Cut over at a month boundary. Run the new tool for expenses dated on or after the first, let Emburse finish everything dated before it, and close the old month in the old system. Mixing the two inside one close is the most common reason a switch looks like it lost money.
Keep the budget view separate from the migration. Budget owners still need to know when a department is running hot during the switch, and that is exactly when nobody is watching. A budget alert on the card feed keeps working whichever expense tool sits on top.
Questions to ask every vendor on the shortlist
- Who exactly counts as a billable user, and do approvers count?
- Is there a minimum user count or a minimum monthly charge?
- Which accounting systems are on my plan, and which cost extra?
- Is implementation priced separately, and is it self-guided or done for me?
- How many ACH reimbursements are included per month?
- What is the renewal increase cap, in writing?
Where SpendNotify fits
SpendNotify is not an Emburse replacement
SpendNotify does not file expense reports, scan receipts or reimburse employees. It watches the card and bank spend you already have and tells a department's budget owner, by email, Slack or webhook, when spend is on pace to pass the budget. That is the gap expense tools leave, because they judge each receipt against policy but never add the receipts up against the quarter. Teams use it next to Emburse, or next to whichever tool replaces it, from $199 a month for the whole company.
Questions buyers ask
Emburse alternatives and pricing questions
Who are Emburse's main competitors?
For US companies the main Emburse competitors are SAP Concur, Expensify, Navan, Ramp, Brex, Zoho Expense and Fyle, which Sage announced it was acquiring in July 2025. Ramp and Brex compete as card platforms with free software tiers, Concur competes for large global programs, and Expensify and Zoho compete on low per-user prices.
How much does Emburse cost?
Only Emburse Spend publishes prices: Basic is $8 and Plus is $12 per active user a month, where an active user is someone who submits an expense that month, and a Custom tier is quoted. Emburse Professional and Emburse Enterprise publish no prices. The full rate card is on our Emburse pricing page.
Is Emburse the same as Certify and Chrome River?
Yes, they are one company. Certify and Chrome River merged in 2019 and the group later took the Emburse name. On emburse.com the old Certify page now redirects to Emburse Professional and the Chrome River page redirects to Emburse Enterprise. Emburse Spend, the third product, grew out of Abacus.
Is Expensify cheaper than Emburse?
On Expensify Collect, usually yes. Collect is $5 per member a month against $8 per submitter on Emburse Spend Basic, so it wins unless many members approve without submitting. Expensify Control at $18 per active member on an annual plan costs more than Emburse Spend Plus for almost any team.
What do Emburse reviews say?
Reviews are listed per product. Emburse Expense Enterprise, the old Chrome River, shows 4.4 from 176 ratings on Capterra and 4.3 on G2. Reviewers praise mobile receipt capture and approval routing, and complain about setup and configuration, some third-party connectors and slow support in older reviews. Read reviews for the product you are actually on.
Can I keep Emburse and still get department budget alerts?
Yes. SpendNotify reads the card charges you already have and alerts the budget owner by email, Slack or webhook when a department is on pace to pass its budget. It does not file expense reports, so it runs next to Emburse or whatever replaces it.
